Reasons to be vegetarian

To name a few…

Numerous studies have shown that vegetarians tend to have a lower risk of heart disease, as well as hypertension, diabetes, cancer and other diseases.

Countries where millions are starving to death export grain to the developed world so to feed the animals that North Americans eat. If we eat the plants we grow instead of feeding them to animals, the world’s food shortage will disappear virtually overnight.

100 acres of land will produce enough beef for 20 people but enough wheat to feed 240 people.

Every day, tens of millions of one-day-old male chicks are killed because they are not able to lay eggs. Some are crushed or suffocated to death. Many are put through the meat grinder, alive. They are used for fertilizer and fed to other chickens.

Meat is a breeding ground for harmful bacteria, especially if not stored, prepared or cooked exactly right. Cut out meat and you lower your risk of food poisoning (especially if you also cut out eggs and dairy). Apparently, according to a USDA report published in 2000, an estimated 89 percent of U.s. beef ground into patties contained traces of E.coli, one of the deadliest forms of food born illness.

You’ve probably heard plenty about the cruel treatment of animals that are raised for food, eggs and dairy. It’s easy to turn a blind eye or plug our ears while animal activists preach but the truth is, animals are abused, starved, overfed, smothered, tortured, neglected, boiled and/or skinned alive, fed manure and the ground remains of like animals, injected with hormones, burned, clipped and castrated without pain killers and many other unthinkably horrific things, all before reaching your plate. You don’t really want to eat that do you?

Water preservation. The late Dr. Georg Borgstrom stated at the 1981 annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, in a presentation titled “Impacts On Demand For And Quality Of Land And Water.”, that it takes 2,500 gallons of water to produce 1 pound of beef. I takes 33 gallons of water to grow a pound of carrots and 25 gallons of water to produce 1lb of wheat Alicia Silverstone remarks in her book, The Kind Life, that “One 16-ounce steak uses the amount of water you need for 6 months of showers!”

It takes up to 16 pounds of soybeans and grains to produce 1 lb. of beef and 3 to 6 lbs. to produce 1 lb of turkey. There are too many starving people in the world to be wasting this kind of resource..

Tropical forests are destroyed daily to create more acreage to raise livestock. These densely treed areas filter our air supply and contain botanical sources. This destruction is irreversible and by not supporting the meat industry, we reduce the demand to deplete these irreplaceable forests.

Fiber absorbs unwanted, excess fats, cleans the intestines, and aids in digestion. Unlike plant foods that are low in fat and high in fiber, meat is full of fat and contains 0 fiber.

There are over 20,000 different drugs, including steroids, antibiotics, growth hormones and other veterinary drugs that are given to livestock animals. These drugs are consumed when animal foods are consumed.

Plant foods last longer than animal foods.

Food from animals contain their waste, including adrenaline, uric and lactic acid, blood and urine etc.,

Excess protein. The average American eats 400% of the RDA for protein causing excess nitrogen in the blood and creating long-term health problems.

Being healthier on a vegetarian diet means spending less on health care.

Our hands, teeth, fingernails, feet, intestinal tract…even our body chemistry is that of an herbivore.

“Whatever affects the body has a corresponding effect on the mind and soul” (E.G. White)

There are vegetable based substitutes for every meat product imaginable.

Cows produce millions of tons of waste filled with antibiotics and growth hormones. The residues of heir waste is beginging to show up in rivers and soil samples far from the farms, and contaminating water supplies.

Eating the reproductive cells of a bird is weird and pretty gross if you think about it.

The human immune system recognizes dairy as an allergen.

Milk causes the body to release more calcium than it provides.

Stealing, then drinking the breast milk of another animal, intended for its’ babies – also weird and creepy.

We are killing all the fish. According to National Geographic, the loss of ocean biodiversity is accelerating, and 29 percent of the seafood species humans consume have already crashed. If the long-term trend continues, it is estimated that by 2048 the ocean will be depleted of fish altogether.

Killing is wrong.

There can never be peace among men while men are declaring war on other highly developed life forms.
