Homemade Laundry Soap

As some of you know, I’m on a mission to get my house as green and earth friendly as possible while reducing my contribution to the supply and demand of all that is evil, harmful to the environment, exploitative of the earth, it’s people, animals and resources etc…

So! In the latest instalment of keeping it real, I gathered the family together and taught everybody how to make homemade laundry soap. It’s so easy it’s ridiculous.

Powdered Laundry Soap:

Ingredients:

1 Part: Borax

1 Part: Washing Soda (not to be confused with baking soda) I found it in a local health food store but it can be found in some grocery stores also, with the laundry detergents.

2 Parts: grated bar of natural soap of your choice. Fels Naptha is the most commonly used but almost any soap will do. I avoid using ones with moisturizers and dyes. You can grate the soap with a cheese grater if you have the time and the strength but the food processor does a great job in about 2 minutes too.

Method:

Mix well and store in an airtight plastic container

Use 1-2 TBS per light load, more for dirtier bigger loads.

Liquid Laundry Soap:

Ingredients:

2 Cups grated bar soap of your choice.

1 Gallon hot water

1 cup Washing Soda

1 cup Borax

Method:

Melt the soap bar over medium heat, stirring the whole time.

Pour into a bucket

Add Washing Soda and the Borax and stir well.

Add hot water and stir well

Let sit overnight and give it a really good stir before using because it will gel.

Mix well and store in an airtight plastic container

For top load washers use 1/2 cup

For front load washers use 1/4 cup
